Back to The Lagos Pub Crawl

Best time to visit Lagos for nightlife

Lagos nightlife is completely seasonal. The same street that is shoulder to shoulder in August is empty and shuttered in January. Getting your dates right matters more here than getting your accommodation right.

The season in one line

April to October, peaking in August. Outside that window the hostels close, the late bars either shut or open only at weekends for locals, and the traveller crowd that generates the whole scene simply is not in town. We do not run crawls in winter for exactly that reason.

June and September are the sweet spot

If you have flexibility, take one of these two. You get warm nights, full bars, a proper backpacker crowd and none of the August pricing on beds. September has the additional advantage of the warmest sea of the year, because the Atlantic lags the air temperature by a couple of months. The only thing you give up is the absolute peak-crowd intensity of the first three weeks of August.

Days of the week

Booking implications

For August, book beds weeks ahead — the good hostels sell out and the leftovers are the ones without a common area, which is the worst possible outcome for your social life. For May, June and September you can usually book a few days out. For anything from November to March, check the hostel is even open before you travel.

Weather, briefly

The Algarve is warm and dry from May to October, with evenings that stay comfortable outside well past midnight through the summer. Spring and autumn evenings cool off more than people expect on the coast, so bring a layer for the walk home in April and October. Winter is mild but wet and windy, and the Atlantic side gets battered.

Common questions

What is the best month for nightlife in Lagos, Portugal?

August is the busiest, but June and September give you nearly the same atmosphere with fewer people and lower prices.

Is Lagos dead in winter?

For nightlife, largely yes. Most hostels and late venues close or cut hours from November to March, and the crawls do not run.

What day of the week is best?

Friday and Saturday everywhere. In peak summer the hostel crowd keeps midweek nights alive too.
