Back to The Lagos Pub Crawl

The Albufeira Strip, honestly

The Strip is the most famous nightlife address in the Algarve and the most misunderstood. It is not in Albufeira old town, it is not subtle, and it is either exactly what you want or exactly what you were trying to avoid.

Where it actually is

The Strip runs along Avenida Doutor Francisco Sá Carneiro in Montechoro, uphill and inland from Albufeira's old town. This trips people up constantly: they book accommodation "in Albufeira", walk down to the old town expecting the Strip, and find a completely different, much quieter set of bars and restaurants around the Praia dos Pescadores. The two areas are about 20-25 minutes apart on foot, mostly uphill on the way back, or a few euros in a taxi.

What it is like

A long, continuous run of bars, clubs, karaoke rooms and fast food, most of them with someone outside offering you a deal. Music spills onto the street from every doorway, the promotions are aggressive, and in July and August the pavement is genuinely packed. It is high-volume, commercial nightlife done well: nothing about it is understated, and it does not pretend otherwise.

Timings and money

Who it suits

Groups. The Strip is built around the assumption that you arrived with the people you are going out with: stag and hen parties, friend groups on a package week, couples doing a big night. If that is you, it delivers more reliably than anywhere else on the coast.

Who it does not suit

Solo travellers and backpackers, mostly. Not because anyone is unfriendly, but because the rooms are full of closed groups and there is no social mechanism to get into them. There is also very little hostel infrastructure in Montechoro compared with the west of the Algarve, so the pre-drinks culture that makes solo nights work elsewhere is largely absent.

The alternative, 50km west

If you have read this far and thought "that sounds like a lot", Lagos is the other model. It is a compact old town with a couple of dozen small bars, a dense hostel scene, and a crowd that is overwhelmingly 18-30 and travelling independently. Instead of one strip you walk a loop, and instead of arriving with a group you tend to leave with one. It is cheaper, quieter on the ears, and much easier alone.

Common questions

Where is the Albufeira Strip?

In Montechoro, uphill and inland from Albufeira old town, along Avenida Doutor Francisco Sa Carneiro. It is a separate area from the old town, about a 20-25 minute walk or a short taxi.

What time does the Albufeira Strip get busy?

Bars fill from about 22:00 and the clubs run from roughly midnight until 04:00 or later in peak summer.

Is the Albufeira Strip family friendly?

Early evening it is fine and many bars serve food. After about 23:00 in summer it is very much an adult drinking strip.

Heading west after Albufeira?

Our crawl runs through the Lagos old town bars and finishes at a club. It is the simplest way to plug into a completely different kind of night out.
