Albufeira vs Lagos nightlife

These are the two nightlife towns of the Algarve and they are not competing for the same person. One is a strip built for groups; the other is a walkable old town built, accidentally, for people travelling alone.

The short answer

Go to Albufeira if you have arrived with your group already assembled and you want big rooms, late licences and a strip where everything is within a hundred metres. Go to Lagos if you are travelling solo or as a pair, you are on a backpacker budget, and you would rather end the night with new people than with a bigger sound system.

What Albufeira does better

What Lagos does better

Can you do both?

On the same night, no. It is 50km each way and the last train leaves long before anything interesting happens, so a night in Albufeira from a Lagos base means a taxi home that costs more than the night. Across a trip, yes: two nights in Albufeira to see the Strip, then base yourself in Lagos for the rest. Most backpackers doing the coast end up giving Lagos the majority of their nights, and it is usually the right call.

If you are travelling alone

Take Lagos. It is not a close decision. The Strip is a difficult place to be on your own — the rooms are full of groups who have known each other for years and nobody is looking to expand. Lagos runs on the opposite assumption. Hostel pre-drinks, drinking games, bar hopping and pub crawls all exist because the default visitor arrived by themselves and needs a way in.

Common questions

Is Albufeira or Lagos better for nightlife?

Albufeira has bigger clubs and more of them. Lagos is better if you are travelling solo or in a small group, because the bars are walkable and the crowd is backpackers who are open to meeting people.

How far is Albufeira from Lagos?

About 50km, roughly 45 minutes by car. The regional train links them but stops running long before nightlife ends.

Which is cheaper, Albufeira or Lagos?

Lagos, generally. Strip bars in Albufeira lean on promotions and shot deals, but accommodation and everyday drink prices tend to be lower in Lagos.

Coming over from Albufeira?

If you are moving west, our crawl is the quickest way to get into the Lagos scene on your first night rather than your third.
